Coping with injustice

Ram faces injustice many times throughout the novel. His most recent act of injustice is when he gets sent to jail, for “cheating” on ” Who wants to win a billion?”. Ram is stereo typed by the producers, police and audience. They believe just because he comes from the slum that he could never know the answers to each question. He gets rescued from jail by Smita, a young lawyer who strongly believes in his case. He has no one to help him cope with this injustice. His “family” has either died or abandoned him. Ram copes by himself. Also with the new people he meets on his journies. But he is also doing good deeds to prove that he is a good person, and that he would never even think of cheating. He has lot’s of pride, dignity and self- respect. He explains to the producers, police and Smita that he has figured these answers through experience. And that this game show is just a text of memory. Ram remembers everything.

In slum dog millionaire Ram finds out that his friend shankark has rabies and will die without the proper vaccine. Since Ram is very poor, he can not pay for the medicine so he ask shankarks Mom but she doesn’t love him so she says she’ll just let him die. As we all know this is beyond wrong, so when Shankark dies Ram is infuriated and while Shankarks mother is having a big fancy dinner party Ram walks in with Shankarks dead body and puts him on the table so every one can see just how evil Shankarks mom is. This is how Ram is trying to right the wrongs in the world we live in.

How The Bad Becomes Good

The harm that is done to Ram throughout the novel is compleatly fixed in the end.  Ram does not go to jail, and he also receives all of the money that he won on the gameshow ‘Who Will Win A Billion?’.  Smita who is Ram’s lawyer helps to keep Ram out of jail and gets all of his charges dropped.  Thank’s to Smita Ram’s life is back to being good.  He has his money and is finally free from racism and discrimination.  He is free to be who he wants and do what he wants.  I think although he endured torture and sadness after he won the money, I think all of that is fixed when he gets his money because he is for the first time in his life a free man.

Ram is trying to do what he thinks is right but also mind his own buisness when he’s working for the australians. He keeps to himself and does what he knows is right. For example when he knows the other slaves are stealing he doesn’t say anyhting cause he knows eventually they will be caught, which they are.

Ram’s Problems

I think the main character in ‘Slumdog Millionaire’ is coping with his problems the best he can.  After he was accused of cheating on a gameshow and is beaten by the police, a woman named Smita comes to his rescue and she tell’s Ram that if he wants help from her he must tell her how he came to know all of the answers, and he does just that.  The way he tells her all of the stories of his life willingly shows that he is trying his best to cope with the situation that he is in.  Ram is of course angry and upset about what is happening to him, and he is hurt that people are discriminating against him because of how much he makes, where he lives and his lack of education.  He knows that it’s not fair and so does Smita.  Smita is doing a good job of staying calm and mellow to help Ram deal with the issues that have been put infront of him.

How are characters reacting to differrently to experiences of injustice?

•January 15, 2010 • 1 Comment

Jai Ho By Pussycat Dolls

Ram is the main character experiencing insjustice. The producers of the gameshow are judging Ram based  on his income, and housing. They believe that someone from the slum could never know the answer to these questions of memory. Ram gets put in jail by the police and producers. The police are beating, Ram trying to get him to say the he cheated. But he is going to take the beating because he knows he did not do this. He is sticking up for his pride and dignity. A mysterious woman walks in and says she is Ram’s lawyer. She get’s him out of jail and will represent him, because he is dealing with extreme injustice. He explains to her that he knew these answers through experience he has had in his life. The producers and police are proved wrong. They have no evidence that Ram ever cheated. Smita is right when she says ” a quiz is not so much a test of knowledge but a test of memory.”

Coping with Injustice

•January 15, 2010 • Leave a Comment

Ram’s life is filled with injustice because of stereotypes and judgements. He has learned to cope with these judgments in his everyday life but he must deal with the latest injustice which has caused him to be arrested. Smita is supporting Ram and helping him cope with the social injustice and I believe without her he would not have been able to cope with the pain. Since Ram does not have any family he has to deal with his life problems by himself or with people he meets along the journey of his life. Normally people who are dealing with a tough situation like this would rely on their family but Ram is alone with no real family. He decides he will cope with the injustice by showing the whole world that he is not a cheater or a criminal. He wants his pride, dignity and he wants the chance at winning the jackpot. He explains in detail his life stories that lead him to the answers of each trivia question. He is coping with the injustice but it still frustartes and angers him that no one will believe he is telling the truth except for Smita. He can not wait till his lawyer, Smita, proves the police and everyone wrong!

There’s really nothing Ram can do about being thought of as a cheater. Right now he is trying to prove his innocence with his lawyer. He is telling his lawyer everything he knows, his whole story, to show how he knew the thing’s they asked him on the show. So thats how Ram is dealing with the injustice in this book
